Fall Prevention Awareness Week

Preventing Falls - One Step at a Time. To highlight fall hazards and increase awareness about how to prevent and reduce falls, the California Department of Aging recognizes the first week of fall, September 22-28, 2013, as "Fall Prevention Awareness Week."

This year's theme, Preventing Falls - One Step at a Time, seeks to unite professionals, older adults, caregivers, and family members, and friends to play a part in raising awareness and preventing falls.

Do you know?

  • One in three older adults fall each year. Half of all seniors over age 80 will fall each year.
  • Falls are the most common cause of hospital admissions for trauma, with costs exceeding $27 billion annually.
  • Falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among older adults.

Falls are Preventable! Here are some things you can do to reduce the risk of falling:

  • Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity, especially balance and strength-building activities. Learn more about proven activity programs for falls prevention and to reduce the fear of falling. Call 1-800-510-2020 to see if programs are available in your community
  • Medication: Portable Document Format File Ask your doctor if the medications you take, or alcohol consumption, increase your risk of falling.
  • Home Safety: Portable Document Format File Identify and correct falling, slipping, or tripping hazards.
  • Vision: Portable Document Format File Have regular vision checks.

To recognize this critical issue, in 2008 California's Legislature passed SCR 77 (Lowenthal), which declared the first week of fall each year as "Fall Prevention Awareness Week".
At the heart of this initiative is the message that falls are preventable.

To raise the public's awareness California's fall prevention coalitions, health care providers, and senior service agencies will hold presentations, health fairs, screenings, and workshops to raise awareness among older adults and their families and caregivers, elder care professionals, and the general public about the seriousness of falls and ways to reduce fall risk.
